Welcome to Howard Elementary

Our veteran staff is a cohesive group that collaborates on academic and behavioral excellence. We are dedicated to the education of our students. We have a library and a fully equipped computer lab available, as well as student services that work to assist students in learning and achieving their goals.
 
Library Volunteers Needed!  Ann Gallagher, the district librarian, Mr. Gray and several community volunteers have been purging our library and shelving our new books.  The volunteers are here every Monday from 9-3PM.  If you are available on any Monday between the hours of 9AM and 3PM, we are seeking volunteers to help with this project.  Please RSVP in the main office.
 
After School Rules- Please review rules listed below,  that were developed by staff to make our dismissal time less chaotic. Also, please remember that students who participate in the Howard After School Program (HASP) MUST report directly to the cafeteria everyday. Early release from the program must be cleared with a HASP staff person. This means that parents or guardians of students must sign them out of the program even if the child is not attending on a particular day. If the child is at school then it is expected that they will go directly to HASP. This is a huge liability issue! Please do not encourage your children to go directly to your car when they are not staying for the program. HASP staff is responsible for making sure that students are picked up by the authorized adult and they must know where the students are at all times. Please help us keep your children safe by following the guidelines.
 
  • Students must exit the building from the front door.
  • Students must walk to their destination.
  • Students in the after school program must go there directly from class.
  • Students who are waiting to be picked up must sit by the flagpole or stand nearby unless they are with an adult.
  • Students must not play with balls or play chase games while waiting to be picked up.  Balls should be stored in backpacks or carried securely.
  • Students must stay on the concrete when walking to their car.  They must not cut across the grass.
  • Students who are purchasing snacks after school on Wednesdays must show good behavior while waiting in line
 
Congratulations to all of the students and teachers who worked so hard on their presentation. All students will receive a participation certificate. Also, appreciation goes to Ms. Chapple and Ms. Rosen for coordinating this historic event.

Rashaan Smith, second grader in Ms. Chapple's class will represent Howard School at the 32nd Annual Dr. Martin L. King. Oratorical Fest on Saturday, March 19, 2011.  The information listed below.
 
 
The Best Me Program sponsored by Kaiser Permanente will be conducted at Howard School during the week of April 4, 2011. Students in grades 2-5 will have individual classroom presentations on nutrition, health and wellness. On Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 5:30 PM, you are invited to Family Night. The performance by the Kaiser Troupe will be held for Howard families.  We are looking forward to this collaboration with Kaiser. Please calendar the dates.
 
Spring Break is April 18-22, 2011. All schools and office in OUSD will be closed. School resumes on Monday, April 25, 2011.  Friday, April 15th is a minimum day.
 
Budget Update: As many of you already know, the state of California is facing some really tough times due to lack of funds allocated to education. OUSD is having to make some really tough choices that will affect all of us in the near future. I will be providing you with informational updates of how you can help us maintain the highest level of programming for our students.  
 
There will be a Student Leadership Conference in Washington D. C. this summer. Ten of our fifth grade students were nominated to participate based on their leadership, citizenship, and academic performance. The students are Jose Rico, John Javier, Andrew Sylva, Ahmari Harris, Gabriel Dobbins, Destiny Williams, Amyah Edwards, Narvis Lawson, Chamare Washington, and Lauryn Hearne. We are looking for two parents to chair a committee that will organize fundraiser to offset the cost of the trip for these families. If you would like to help, please contact Ms. Sexton or the main office.

OUSD Budget Woes:  We are experiencing the worst budget crisis since I started working for the district.  When I became the principal of Howard School, we had eleven teachers on staff.  Over the past few years, our enrollment has declined and we currently have seven teachers on staff for general education students.  During our recent school site council meeting, I informed the members that due to the cuts, we will only have six teachers next year!  In addition, we will reduce the clerical positions.  Hopefully, you are keeping yourself informed about the state of public education.  Even more importantly, you need to know how Howard Elementary will be impacted. 
 
There will be a very important board meeting on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 5PM at the administration building.  OUSD staff and union representatives plan to attend this meeting to make a plea to the board to keep the cuts away from the school sites. 
 
If you can't attend the board meeting tomorrow night but want to stay informed, you can tuned in at 5PM on Comcast Channel 27 or ATT Uverse 99.  The meeting will be aired in its entirety.  The meeting is also streamed through the district's website.  Here is the link below:
